I have been on amitrip for 8 months and it did wonders for my chronic migraine attacks and bad sleeping habits. Side affects are horrible. I experienced the weight gain and excessive urinating. I started on out 50mg, now I am down to 10mg and hopefully by the end of the summer, I can be off this meds. Caution, do not just try to stop taking this meds, you have to slowly wean yourself off. I tried to come off to early and my migranes came back with a VENGENCE.

I was taking amitriptyline for a month & I found they really helped me get a good nights kip. I never really had a problem b4 I just felt more refreshed when on these. I was given them for my migraines & felt they really helped however once I ran out of them I couldn't sleep! I went bk 2 my doc for a repeat prescription & when I told her I had trouble sleeping she refused point blank to give me them because of the side effect I was having. I wasn't told b4 they can cause insomnia & I feel I should've. I have 2 young children & sleep is a must with such an active life style. B4 taking these make sure u know all the pros & cons. I was told to take 1-3 10mg tablets each evening. I started on 1 & went up to 2 & wish I hadn't have!

Take the medication at night time! It makes you sleepy (which is a benefit to me). I wake up refreshed, but it took a few weeks of slow wake up days before I felt normal.

I have been on it for more that 11 years, but I find that I need to take it sometime between 5:30 pm and 7:00 pm for it to work well and not make me too drowsy but still let it help me to get a good sleep.

Hi. I have just been diagnosed with chronic fatigue syndrome and been given 10mg of amitrip a day. I have only been on it 5 days but I barely function..I am drowsy and very slow in moving and find it hard to concentrate. It is effecting my job. How long before these side effects go? :(

Been taking Amitriptyline for over 3 years now. It has definitely reduced number of migraine attacks. I cut a 10 mg tablet in half & take one half each day before evening meal. Yes, it did make me sleepy if I took a whole 10 mg tablet that is why I have tried to become less dependent on it. It doesn't suit everybody. To try & prevent acute attacks I am prescribed Eletriptan, but if my migraine has progressed to vomiting this won't be effective. Have you tried Eletriptan? It can work well if taken early enough.
