I've taken it for 50 years combined with phenobarb. Gums are puffy (only a dentist notices) and they may bleed during a dental cleaning. I go in ever 3 months instead of 6. It seems to chill you out and associates may comment that you are really layed back. I think there are much newer meds for the same thing. Phizer used to combine Dilantin with Phenobarb which was super convenient. Now you have to carry the kapseals (capsuls) and tabs of phenobarb. Might check into bone weakening but take OTC vitamin C and D.

Dilantin contains the active ingredient Phenytoin, and is commonly used to treat epilepsy.
Some long term usage effects associated with it can include drug induced lupus and gingival swelling.
My mom is 73 and has been taking Dilantin since she was 21. About 4 years she showed signs of danensha ? about a month and a half ago she was becoming ailttle more forgetful and forgetting to take her meds. Her Dilantin was perscribed to be taken 3 times a day well since she was forgetting to take them her doctor said she could take all her meds at the same time. Not only the dilantin but phenabarbatol together we have been doing this for about a month. I have been going everyday to give her the meds. The otherday i went and found her on the floor not unconsious but confused i thought she was having a stroke. At the hospital her levels were half of what nthey should have been. The dilantin is 100mg the phenabarb 32.4 mg. She was very restless could not stay still just like someone who has parkinsens they gave her adavan the first night then they started giveing her zanax. She has come around alittle the doctor said her body wasnt absorbing the meds. I wonder is this happening because she was taking the dilantin all at one time. I cant see in less then 24 hours a person getting that bad from damensha. If her body wasnt absorbing the meds could it do this and when it is regulated will she come out of this. She has become imune to the meds before and the doctor would increase it for a bit the back it down but this has never happened like this before this is way out of the norm.
