Kionex Overview

Polystyrene sulfonates are polystyrene sulfonic acid polysalts. In medical applications the counter ions are usually sodium and calcium. Polystyrene sulfonates are indicated as potassium binders in acute and chronic kidney disease for patients suffering from hyperkalaemia (abnormal high blood serum potassium levels), which may e.g. result in weakness or irregular heartbeat.[1][2] Sodium polystyrene sulfonate (INN) is marketed under trade names such as Kayexalate, Kionex, and Resonium A.
