This med caused a blistering rash on my elderly Mother. It was given to her for a UTI. With all the other drugs that could have been adminster I find this upsetting. She ended up in the hospital, on her birthday only 2 days after taking this drug covered with chicken pox like spots. I knew it was a reaction to something. She was hurting all over and at 87 years old it was not an easy thing for her to deal with. However, after ruling out shingles a few doses of Benadrly the rash stop itching and dried up.

If this is a know side effect of the drug sulfameth/tmp ds it should not be given, In my opinion, to children or elderly. It only makes them feel worse then the orginal reason they came into the doctors office in the first place. While I'm no a medical doctor, consider asking for a different drug and not taking it in the first place.

Sulfamethoxazole + Trimethoprim DS is a sulfonamide antibacterial combination of Trimethoprim and Sulfamethoxazole, in the ratio of 1 to 5, used in the treatment of a variety of bacterial infections.

To answer your other question: Yes, Bactrim is just another trade name for this drug.
