I am taking the percocet 512 white tablets 5mg/325 for severe back pain due to degenerating disc(s). I have been told 1 pill every 8 hours, but find the pain so excruciating after about 5 hours that I cannot even stand... even to use the bathroom or shower. My MD cannot get me into a specialist until August, but I am having real stress here. Will it be harmful for me to take more than the one tablet per 8 hours??

Back pain is horrible. Its the worst kind of chronic pain besides a tooth. Listen man, if the pain is that bad ask your doctor for a perc 15. This is usally for cancer patients, but come on..., they arent even that strong and they wont make you sick cause there's less filler. However you can get addicted without acknowledgment. Please be careful. But with those you could prob. take 1 every two days. Theres also prosthetic vertebrae discs. Good luck and remember, we're only human.

OXY IS HIGHLY ADDICTIVE AND VERY DANGEROUS,,,,PLEASE GET ALL THE INFORMATION YOU CAN ABOUT OXYCONTIN. I KNOW A LOT OF PEOPLE WHO TOOK IT SHORT TERM AND GOT ADDICTED AND ARE NOT ON METHADONE BECAUSE THEY COULDN'T STOP TAKING IT. THEY COULD END UP ON METHADONE FOREVER CAUSE THEIR DOSES KEEP GOING UP BECAUSE THEY BECOME AGITATED. I HAVE BEEN ON PERCOCET FOR 13 YEARS TO WALK BECAUSE I HAD ONE ANKLE CRUSHED AND THE OTHER IS FULL OF PLATES AND BOLTS. WITHOUT THEM I WOULD NOT WALK,,,,,,,,,,,,,I DO NOT WANT TO GO ON OXY BECAUSE I AM AFRAID TO BECOME SEVERELY ADDICTED TO IT. I BELIEVE ITS SAFER TO TAKE MORE PERCOCET THAN IT IS TO TAKE OXYCONTIN. THERE IS ONLY 5MGS OF OXYCONTIN IN PERKS AND THE ACETAMINOPHEN WORKS WELL WITH IT.

Your best bet, if you're worried about Acetaminophen poisoning, usually seen at doses of 4 grams (4000 mg) or more for the average adult in a 24 hour period, which is still considered a high dose and can cause liver damage over time, is to talk to your MD about getting straight Oxycodone, which is the narcotic med in Percocet, just without the APAP. It comes in the same strengths as Percocet, 5mg and 10mg (The 10mg pills are getting harder and harder to find to get a script filled, but they exist) then there's Oxycontin, which is just extended release Oxycodone, so you can take less pills as they have a coating on them that makes them dissolve slower in your stomach, and give you relief for a longer period of time (6-12 hours usually, depending on the patient) which come in strengths of 10mg - 80mg. I had a Gastric Bypass in 2008, so sadly, I don't absorb medications as well as a person with a normal stomach, and personally am on 50mcg(micrograms)/hour of Fentanyl, a patch you put on your upper arm or back of your neck, which is replaced with a new patch every 48-72 hours at your doctors discretion [48 for me]) that delivers a very potent synthetic narcotic analgesic through heat conduction releasing the medication from the patch into the body, said patches along with straight Oxycodone (no APAP, although I do take 2 Tylenol PM to sleep and alternate between the Tylenol PM and Ambien [Zolpidem} every few weeks as my tolerance builds and my insomnia creeps back in) seem to work well for me for the time being, as for the Oxycodone, I take a 5mg tablet every 2 hours, equaling 60mg daily. So, I ranted quite a bit, but it comes down to this, if you're worried about APAP poisoning/overdose, ask your doctor for JUST Oxycodone, without the Acetaminophen, but most Docs don't tend to give out high enough doses of Percocet to be anywhere near the 4000mg/day of APAP. Good luck, and keep us updated!!!

I'm sorry but your info is Incorrect! I'm not a doctor but my wife and daughter are nurses. Do NOT take additional acetaminophen of any kind with your Oxycodone/Acetaminophen or Percocet. It is the Acetaminophen that can do serious and permanent damage to your Liver! 4 grams of Acet is considered the max dosesge so 1 every 6 hrs only gives you 1.275 grams... Way under the max level. 1-2 every 4-6 hrs of the 5/325 is still way under the limit but a very typical for a normal adult. Long term on the Percocet can be addictive and have withdrawals so there is a whole new complication to deal with. Talk with you Dr for a better pain regime. I'm on Oxycodone/Acetaminophen 5/325 for major shoulder surgery and I take 2 every 4 hrs round the clock cause one just dont touch the pain! Good Luck

You are so right but how can we get it unless you live in california. If I had medical marijuana i know i would not have this chronic pain but until then i guess addictive painkillers will have to do in order to get off the couch and have somewhat of a life.

Medical marijuana would solve all of everybody's problems on this thread, just saying. Takes care of chronic pain, no risk of addiction, and no proven serious health risks.

Max dose 2 pills every 6 hours not to excede 8 pills per day. Exceeding the max dosage can be toxic to your liver.

This is a reply from the preson who wanted to know if its ok to take more than the one pill. It is safe to take at least 1/2 pills every 4 to 6 hours as needed for pain. This is coming from a person who is prescribed the same medication. I have been taking the percocet for 3 years straight now due to some back issues involving my disc. So yes it is ok to take more than the one you you have been taking every 8 hours. Honestly one every 8 hours is not enough especially if its only the 5mg.

Hello, I was wondering if anyone can tell me about withdrawal from percocets. I was only taking 1/2 to 1 tablet every 24 hours for the last six months or so due to degeneratiave disc disease in my back. Now I have run out and am on day 3 of withdrawals. My question is if I was taking that amount is it enough to put me in full withdrawal or is this all in my head or are the feelings I am having really physical. Thank you so much if any one can help answer my question. Have a nice day.

There are so many people in real pain everyday like myself. Most of us dont have alot of money and must work every day just to make ends partially meet. we have to take some kind of drug just to make it thru. if at all. i will not let anyone cut on my back until i have to . so what if your addicted. we must survive. and if and when the time comes to get rid of it. then deal with it then. meanwhile we live from day to day.

I've been on pain management for several years. I've tried going off but end up back on due to the back pain. I've had three surgeries and currently have sciatic nerve damage and two herniated discs at L4-L5 and L5-S1. I take 15mg of oxycodone 3 to 4 times a day. I was taking 2x 7.5mg/325. I convinced my doctor to give me 10mg/325s and I cut one in half. This way I'm at 1950mg or less of tylenol a day.

I have been concerned about the tylenol and my liver for quite some time. I have pushed my doctor about other options and all it has done is make him think I'm looking to abuse the medication. It's sad that people who actually use the drug as prescribed have to risk liver failure and death because doctors are too concerned with the patient abusing. Basically they would rather you risk dying from liver failure than to deal with the chance a patient might abuse their medication. That's pretty messed up.

Everyones body is different, some have a higher tolerance to painkillers and some have low. I have a high tolerance to these meds. Some times I take 3 3/325 oxy every 5 hours for about a year now. You never want to exceed 4000mg of the tylenol in 24hours (325mg is the tylenol).Exceed 4000mg and you can expect sever damage to your liver and can be fatal. But follow the directions on the bottle unless instructed by your physician. Do not continue use unless you need it, because Oxycodone can be habit-forming. =]

I have fibro. was taking darvocet for about 15yrs. It stop my chronic pain untill it was taken of the market. I had not one withdrawal from darvocet. my DR. took two test to check and see if the acetaminophen had done any damage to my liver, and told me it had not. I had to get back on some pain meds. for my pain. He put me on percocet 10/325 at first, but told him it was to strong for me,then he changed it to 5/325. I 'm supposeto take it twicedaily as needed. I cannot take even one whole one, because it makes me feel worse. IT has a terrible affect on my eyes.can't hardly see. I decided myself before the I took the first one to half it,but a half does the same.so I don't take any of it. I want take another one.I SEE MY DR. in three week's, and will tell him about the percocet.

I have chronic interstitial cystitis. My Dr. called me in hydrocodone/apap 5/500 on Wed. and instructions are 2 every 4-6 hours needed for pain. how long should those last? It is saturday evening and I have 4 left and I am afraid to ask for refill. I dont want to be labeled a drug abuser. I am new to chronic pain treatments and medications but I know I need relief.

I also take 10/325 in conjunction with 5/325. 4-10's per day along with 6-5's per day (2925mg of tylenol). for back, disk, nerve damage. The tylenol is the crutial part that u need to control, it will harm you long before the oxycodone. I have known people that have taken upwards of 45 per day of the 5/325's. it's not good on the liver... Maximum limit 4000 mg of tylenol per day. 3000mg to be safe. They also make a 10,15,20 and 30mg oxycodone hydrocloride that has no tylenol at all. Dr;s don't like to perscribe them tho because junkies can break them down and shoot them up cause they are pure drug. When u exceed your tylenol limit for the day the doc with most like change u to something like this

I'm currently taking the 512 stuff following tonsillectomy. 1-2 every 4-6 hours is what the doc and the bottle says, but 1 just isn't enough and even 2 i'm in pain again after about 3 hours. any reason i can't take 1 every 2 hours, that way at the 2nd pill i should always have about the same as a 1.2 pill dosage, and it won't wear off causing me to feel pain. also i'll never hit as high a dosage
