I been having sharp stomach cramps and pain after my appendectomy 4 weeks ago. I am taking nexium 20mg a day. My doc asked me to take it for 1 months. This doesn't help with the pain and cramps? Can I take charcoal even I am taking nexium?

Hi all,
I have recently been experiencing severe (and smelly) flatulence, extreme bloating & discomfort. I've been to the doctor a number of times who hasn't prescribed me anything, but I have heard of the use of charcoal tablets/capsules.
Does charcoal help reduce and relieve flatulence?

I take loperamide hydrocholine on prescription (Immodium available over the counter) for diarrhoea. I have chronic IBS and this makes the stool much firmer

For a week and 2 days, i have been having diarreah andstomach cramp. Been to emergency room twice and their meds are not workin; i cannot keep down anything; they say i caught a stomach virus. Each time is eat (plain soup) or liquids, i would cramp real hard and go to the bathroom. I had 2 bottles of IV with pain killer the first time i went to the ER, the second time which was last night, i had 1 bottle of IV with pain meds; all my blood work and xrays came out fine. Not sure is i can use charcoal, or if anyone ever experience such, please share. I am weak, and becuase i go to the bathroom i am afraid to eat or drink. I have never experience anything of his magnitude.
Thanks for your help

I have been experiencing severe indigestion recently so have been taking 2 Activated Charcoal tablets once a day...or in a 2-3 day period. I am excessively tired to the point I can hardly keep my eyes open or focused. Just had a blood test done. Everything normal except for iron....Low!! Rated as 25. Ratings range from 115-135. Do charcoal tablets absorb iron??

Hi Ruth,
Try brewing fennel seeds in a teapot and drink 2 cups of fennel tea every morning. I had the same problem and this helped me. Within a few days the stomach pain stopped and then diarrhea ended a few weeks later.
Here are a few product links for the fennel seed tea:
Alvita Fennel Seed Tea (24 bags)
Heather Tummy Care Products
Good luck!

for Ruth Brown, if you still read it
Hello,
I have had not really diarrhea, but close and many times. But charcoal rather for something else.
I love charcoal, it is always in my medicine chest, like for many europien people.
Also chamomile tea the real, not the over processed bagged one, rather the bulk coop store produce, called the german chamomile for many good purpose
I used acidophiles tablets, for my daughter advise, who is not a doctor, but environment scientist and she was right: I am very ok now, i don't even need anymore, after some month using it.
I still have 3-4 times a day, but nice normal healthy, soft stool, not smelly either.
I read from a doctor, the more than one time is pretty good. Almost anytime i go to pee. I feel good. Occasionally need charcoal, if i eat somewhere, who knows how to handled, or lot of sated green pepper, or mushroom make gases, or ...embarrassing from overeat...but not recently, it was in the past, thanks God.
I eat pretty much veggie, so i don't surprise, for more than once a day. Good chance also not to get cancer in the intestine - got a good test result, no polyp - like people who has frequent constipation.
Search on it, but regular doctors not telling you.
Good luck.
I just order charcoal, how i found you

My internist suggested daily fiber such as Metamucil to balance my system. One would think this would just perpetuate the problem, but actually it has helped tremendously. Good luck!

It is supposedly a very safe medicine to take.
Activated charcoal is a traditional remedy for treating excess stomach and intestinal gas. It works by attracting excess gas in the stomach and bowels, which binds to the surface of the charcoal powder. This relieves the discomfort caused by excess gas (flatulence), wind, indigestion and heartburn. The charcoal is not absorbed from the gut. Activated charcoal is also used in hospital emergency departments to treat poisoning. However, when used in this way, activated charcoal is given in much larger doses than those contained in this preparation. You should never attempt to treat poisoning yourself with this preparation. Cases of poisoning should always be taken directly to a hospital emergency department, where the most appropriate treatment can be administered.
Activated charcoal has the potential to interact with most other medicines, because it can bind to them in the gut and prevent them being absorbed. This may depend on the dose of charcoal taken. Consult your doctor or pharmacist before taking activated charcoal, if you are taking any other medicines.
