I have had 2 cervical spine (neck) operations and the bottom 5 vertebrae are fused together. I have constant pain from the base of my skull, across my shoulders and down my back. Sometimes quite intense.. The doctors wanted to o put me on long acting morphine rather than Qxy because Qxy goes up and down as the dose wears off. I reacted (emotionally) poorly to this so they put me on Methadone (no I am not a heroine addict.) I have been on it for a year and a half and it works very well with little or no side effects except one. I found that if the dose was too high, I lost my short term memory so you and your doctor need to find the right dose to relieve the pain without losing your memory.

Looking for answers: I was in a terrible car accident about 15 yrs. ago. I was diagnosed with whiplash and eventually fibromyalgia. There is alot more out about fibromyalgia now and at first I was given great medication at a pain clinic. Over time the insurance was capped ext. and they started weaning me off things. Needleess to say the original fibromyalgia symptoms and I know you are aware of how bad they are came back. I went and got books went to a chriropractor and on the free x-ray she wouldn't even treat me. they found out in my mid spine that 3/4 of the bone was missing and the discs around it where bulged. She called my Dr. and then I went through a nuerosergeon clinic. After all my scans ect. I went in for a follow up. He actually admitted to me that about 90% of the claims for pain are pretty much unfounded and that without even seeing my films he had already dictated a letter to my Dr. to start weaning me off and letting me go. But that he would call today personally and tell my Dr. to disregard the letter jee thanks, My mistake looking back is that I should have gotten the new diagnosis in writing, I did get the mri's ect. But essentially he tould me that there was literally two small string no bigger than thread holding my entire my spine together. And because noone could or would ever do surgery do to the risk of breaking my back and paralizing me. That day my life really changed, but for your wife the good news is the low meds if they are the right ones will handle the fibromyalgia pain. I have alot wrong now but from experience, keep every record every one no matter what they cost . Find a Dr. that will treat you Don't Dr. hunt ask the ob/gyn ask around read local websites about area hosp. ect. and use the least amount of meds as posiibble to work.Because you will become tolerant and this is lifelong. Since Dr.s' themselves have now come down with fibromyalgia alot more credence is given. If a Dr. starts off with you can't handle pain like other people you have the wrong Dr. If he or she writes you a mild narcotic decline it find the write Dr. berore you start taking any controlled meds. If you have to leave there it is a crime to go to Dr. to Dr. and get those kinds of meds. Find a Dr. that believes youfirst. Stay as active as possible, where loose clothes lose wieght ect. all this helps educate yourself about the illness, the meds and find the right Dr. Most important make sure nothing else is going on turn out in my case I had already been living in pain for a long time before my accident, and Really I had a high threshehold for pain. I had spent about 175,000.00 in medical bills and went undiagnosed. One treated for that problem it took care of the fibromyalgia. Muscle relaxers helped me and then I became allergic to them and went to valium. That with ultram might be a good start and it is not too much to a Dr.

My wife was diagnosed with fibromyalgia and nothing seems to work for her. Just recently see went to a pain management doctor, which is supposed to be one of the best. He started her on Morphine sulf er 15 mg, One Tab twice a day. She also take Vicodin two 10/660 tab every four to 6 hours, and Lyrcia two 75 mg tabs twice a day. Seems that the Morphine made no difference. It hurts her all over her body. I hope this doctor finds a way to help her because she is at the end of her wits

ms contin 15 mg is time release just like oxycotin is time release oxycodone. oxycodone is about 3 times more potent that ms cotin (morphine sulfate) but has harsher withdrawls. 30 mg oxycotin(time release) is like taking 10 mg oxycodone (non time release)

TO ROB,
I have been taking Oxycontin/Oxycodone (same drug..generic/Name brand) and have been on the same dosage for 4 yrs....most people continually go up, up and away..lol...I am trying to ween myself off oxycodone and am using Valium (muscle relaxant and anti'anxiety med) to help and it is working out well. I was taking Oxycontin 40mg and Percocet(Oxycodone/Acetameaphin) 10mg/650mg and in just one month have cut down to 30 mg Oxycontin and kept the same dosage on the Oxycodone. You have to try and see what works best for you. your metabolism, etc..
In my situation, my pain is unrelenting and about 8 to 9 w/o meds..down to 4 to 5 (on a scale of 1 to 10, of course). The valium relaxes the spasms created by PAIN and I have found that I can lower my dosage that way...SO FAR SO GOOD....I'll keep you posted. I know I would rather not take anything at atll but then I wouldn't be able to move, sit, stand, walk, or move w/o that INSANE PAIN that just DOES NOT GO AWAY EVER!!!
Best choice I have made to date in my 6 yrs. of TORTURE!!

15 MG OF MORPHINE IS EQUAL TO and WORKS THE SAME WAY AS OXYCONTIN...15 mg would be like taking 20mg of oxycontin. I too have had both and many other pain meds to see what works best for me. I hope that helps you in figuring out what you need for your current situation.

FYI, there is no such word in the English vocabulary as Anyways.

Try using anyway, anyhow, strike using that sentence altogether, or re-word it altogether.

Anyways...

It's unfortunate that the insurance companies are the bottom line to our health care... OxyContin was not approved and other time released narcotics were not approved either so was left with morphine sulphate. Thanks for the advice though!! Also, narcotics, in my experience, has much better pain relief than Ultram or Toradol, but for some people works great... you'll have to find out how your body responds. -Rob

Rob, has your doctor ever had you try Oxycontin or Oxycodone? It is much more effective than the Morhine in much lower doses.

I had the same problems you did with Tramadol and etc. and nothing else worked, so we finally had to give up and resort to narcotics for the chronic pain I suffer from my condition. I was on Oxycodone, then Oxycontin for awhile and it handled my pain wonderfully, however then my insurance decided to quit covering it because of the high rates of abuse. I had to switch to Morphine. So from experience I can tell you that it is not as effective as the Oxycodones.

Aziz, this is a controlled substance, so purchasing it without a prescription in the US is illegal.

I took 100 mg of morphine sulfate a day for 7 years for chronic migraine headaches because I'm allergic to the popular non-narcotic migraine medicines. It really did help me stay on top of the pain and I was able to function quite well so that I didn't miss any work (as I would with a 2-day to a 2-week long horrible headache, at least a couple times a month). After 7 years my doc said I should change medications to another non-narcotic kind and the plan was to switch to Ultram and Toradol. Getting off of the narcotics required 10 days in an inpatient facility, and in order for my insurance to pay for that I had to spend the last 8 days in a drug rehab setting... What an education! The first 2 days was in a behavioral ward in a hospital psych unit with strong tranquilizers and muscle relaxers and I don't remember much of those 2 days. By the time I was able to come home I had lost 53 pounds the hard way -- due to vomiting and diarrhea continuously for the last 8 days. This was the hardest thing I've ever done. If you plan to only take the morphine sulfate for a couple of weeks for temporary pain while you heal, then that would work. It's great pain relief...! but if it is for any longer than that you WILL become physically dependent (addicted) and stopping takes more than a little effort. If you have chronic pain, plan to take it for the rest of your life. Within one year I was back on it because nothing else kept my pain under control...and I DO plan to take it for the rest of my life or until they come up with something more effective for my chronic pain/migraines. Good luck! -Rob
