I WAS PRESCRIBED THE 50 MCG/HR FENTANYL PATCH FOR CHRONIC BACK PAIN & DEGENERATIVE DISC DISEASE. I WAS GIVEN THE PRESCRIPTION SEVERAL WEEKS AGO. I JUST GOT IT FILLED 2 DAYS AGO BECAUSE I'M AFRIAD TO USE IT. I HAVE READ ALL THE PATIENT INFO, RESEARCHED IT ON THE NET & TALKED TO SEVERAL PHARMACISTS AS WELL AS MY PRIMARY CARE PHYSICIAN. ALL OF THE PHYSICIANS & PHARMACISTS TELL ME THAT THE PATCH WILL HELP ME WITH THE DAILY PAIN. THEY SAY THAT THE PATCH SHOULD NOT CAUSE ME ANY HARM BUT THE ONE TING THAT'S STOPPING ME FROM USING IT IS THE RESPIRATORY SIDE EFFECTS & POSSIBLE OVERDOSE. I'M SEEKING SOME ADVISE FROM PEOPLE THAT HAVE USED THIS DRUG BEFORE WHETHER IT WAS A GOOD OR BAD OUTCOME.

I AM OPOID TOLERANT BECAUSE I'VE BEEN DEALING WITH THIS PAIN FOR THE LAST 5-6 YEARS. WHEN I HAVE A BREAKTHROUGH OF PAIN & HAVE TO SEEK EMERGENCY TREATMENT OTHER PAIN MEDS GIVEN (IV OR IM) DON'T WORK ANYMORE. ER'S HAVE GIVEN ME MORPHINE & IT DOESN'T EVEN TAKE THE EDGE OFF THE PAIN. DILAUDID DOESN'T WORK UNLESS I'M GIVEN MORE THAN 3MG'S & THAT WEARS OFF AFTER ABOUT AN HOUR IF IT LASTS THAT LONG. WHEN I'M IN SEVERE PAIN MY PRESSURE RISES. I'M AFRAID OF THE PATCH B/C I DON'T WANT TO FAINT OR PASS OUT FROM A DROP IN MY PRESSURE. I'M CURRENTLY TAKING VICODIN 7.5/500 EVERY 4 HOURS. I HAVE NOW BUILT A TOLERANCE FOR THE VICODIN AND IT HAS BEEN CHANGED TO PERCOCET 5/325 & SOMETIMES I CAN TAKE UP TO 3 OF THEM EVERY 4 HOURS.

I'M ALSO ON OTHER MEDS THAT I BELIEVE WILL INTERACT WITH THE FENTANYL. I TAKE LEXAPRO, ATIVAN, CLONIDINE DAILY. I NEED SERIOUS HELP!!!

if your in enough pain you'll take what works for you and be-dammed the condemnation you get for it.As for doctors, don't search for pill-pushers, find a doctor who cares. Have not mentioned one pain med that I have not taken.

yes, you do need a help, ive been dealing with chronic pain for 5 years and have not graduated to patches. i switch off between vico and perco and also flush out my system every couple months for a few days and just suck up the pain. ive got degenerative disc disease, every disc is gone, vertabrae are staring to dissolve. i understand pain, but you also need to consider the other systems in your body and what your doing to them. with all the pills your taking im really surprised a patch scares you, it at least slowly releases the meds in to your system as opposed to popping a handful of pills that dissolve at once in your belly. just food for thought. good luck.

Hi & thanks for the info! Very helpful to me. Almost 2 wks ago I switched from almost 15 oxycodone 30mg per day to 2 fentanyl 100mg each patches every 48hrs. All this is to possibly have cervical surgery & get on livitrol. I have always had addiction problems but the pain has really made things worse. Now on total disability, possibly a ruined 10 yr relationshipship, blah blah blah - i'm sure you've all heard this. After reading this forum about the fentynal withdrawals I'm scared to death and have just taken one patch off. Any suggestions? I am under a doctor's care. Judy

James's wife: I really hope that you get results from the Fentanyl. I am on 75 mcg patches every 48 hrs and I still hurt bad. I had a discectomy in 2008 and I developed osteoarthritis in my neck and right shoulder after that. I hurt all day long and my doctor has tried everything. I am in the same situation...just wanna live a pain free life and raise my daughter the best that I can. I don't wish this life on anyone but it's comforting to know that I'm not the only one going thru this. If you need anything or have any questions about fentanyl you can email me.

I as well deal with chronic back and neck pain. I have been dealing w this pain for a year 1/2. Have tried numerous medications with very little relief. The fentanyl patch has worked the best so far. Your post caught my attention with saying that you also take lexapro and ativan, I am also on those along with a few other meds. I have not had any major side effects with it. Yes it is wise that you have all your prescriptions at the same pharmacy, so if there is something that may interact with another a warning will pop up. Hope it works well for you and maybe will give you a chance that you may not have to take as many of the other pain meds.

Hi you just have to take things very slowly as i was on 200 of fentayl and morphine as well for brake through pain but i have resently had as on opperation on my spine and seven nerves were traped i have startted to cut it down the amount or morphine first and that took me two weeks then i startted on the fentayl and that has been a long and hard decesion with it as its hard to find some one to help my G.P has be a gos send but you just have to take it very slowly as i dropped 50 at a time and that was hell as my body just could not cope withh it i had the sweats and all so just could not sleep and very restless as well but the warse was that my breathing got very slow so for god sake just take it slowly as i went through hell the main thing i found was to drink lots of water because you do sweat alot and yo do not want to become dehydrated at all so just keep drinking lots of water and all so leve the patches on for a least 2 weeks on the same streanth then your body has a chance to settle down and you have a chance of copping with it because the patches come in 100 , 50 ,25 and 12 so you can get a good mix to drop them slowly do not cut them up asit can cause problems you can put as meney diffrent one's on i have 3 on so it's better asiam dropping them very slowly but it takes time but you will get there in the end as i have gone from 200 to 75 now but you have to be focaust on it and if it dose become to much i have stayed on the same level for 3 weeks then moved on again but i must stress it just takes time

I have been taking Opana for 5 months Opana 20's/ 2 per day for 1 month, then Opana 30's/ 2 per day for 1 month, then Opana 30's/ 2 per day for 1 month, then Opana 30's/ 3 per day for 1 month, then Opana 40's/ 3 per day for 1 month.

I just got home from surgery.. I had bone(s) fused & metal rods installed in my lower back.

And, I lost my health insurance a month ago, too,

So, every penny counts. My hopes & prayers are to never take another pain pill and somehow return yo a normal life. I plan to go find a job next week.

I have 3 pks of Fentanyl 75 mcg/hr patches and 1 pk of Fentanyl 50 mcg/hr patches left from before I started taking the Opnan.

How do I translate these. Can I use these Fentanyl 75 mcg/hr patches for the next couple of weeks while I recover from surgery ? safely ?

Now,

I started on 100 mch/hr and worked back down to 50 patch in 3-4 months. only Took acetaminophen for Breakout. High Morphine was the only help in a bad spasm arthritic low back/neck situation. The Pain Dr.s retired me, a Mechanical Engineer at age 59. Too much concrete , hours 60, and stress. Tried everything. Fentanyl and 1 mg Alprazalam for nerves/spasms and 4 acetos per day gave me my life back. If what you'redoing starts to hurt, change what your doing... I have sleep apnea, and was afraid, but stay in Rx amt and you'll be ok. The Zquiet mouthpiece stopped my alnea ist and evertg night. It keeps your lower jaw up and out, no stoppage. Good Luck. I've been same rx amt. for 11 years.

Hi to all with questions regarding Fentanyl patches. I have been using these for a few years now and they are life savers. I have degenerative disc disease, herniated L4/5,hip bursitis, Ostio arthritis and several other spinal problems. Along with the Fentanyl patches I take a low dose ms contin for breakthrough pain and if for some reason I'm having severe pain I also take endone. These are the only medications that give me any quality of life, and even though that's fairly limited I'm out of bed, I'm able to drive the car, take care of myself etc. I honestly feel I have tried everything besides surgery(not keen to go there) and this is the best. I'm 39 and have been suffering the above for 6yrs. I'm a single parent and am on a disability payment. I encourage anyone to give the fentanyl a go as I'm very tolerant to everything but find success with this. I also take an anti depres and it has no effects on my pain meds.
I know this sounds terrible but I'm glad I'm not the only person of my age with these probs.. I feel very alone in this situation and it drives me crazy, I find because it can't be seen people doubt my situation. I lost my husband and my family through this so it's been an emotional struggle along with unbearable pain. I'm so thankful for my D.R and friends for their care and understanding. All the best to anyone suffering in pain as I know it's unbearable and certainly no way to live. Good luck in finding the medications that work for you. Xx Melissa

I have one on as I type! I was in an accident a couple of years ago and it helps greatly with my pain and completing daily tasks that I couldn't before. Before this, I had a Fentanyl 25mg prescription. This one is much better and hasn't given me any bad reactions or side effects so far. Go for it, Love. Live your life like you should...pain free. :)

My husband has been on Fentanyl transdermal 50 mcg patches for the past 7 years. He's had back surgery, a collapsed disc, hip and knee problems as well. In addition, he has chronic fatigue syndrome. The patch has allowed him on a limited basis to participate in (as opposed to enjoying) a normal appearing lifestyle. We would even travel --mostly cruises where he could go to bed when he needed to. This year the federal government requires that Fentanyl be dispensed only on a strict 30 day new prescription per month basis. We used to get 90 days and were free to travel without worrying about running out. Even being one day short sends my husband into withdrawal. Must we go outside the USA to get more than a 30 day supply? If so, where and how?

Ok I think the patches are a great way for people to get relief from chronic back pain. They are safe as long as they are not chewed on. But I think u will find them to be very helpful for your pain. Especially if u continue taking your vicodin for breakthrough pain ( if u even had any on the patches they are effective)
