You tested positive on your drug test because codeine is an opiate, along the lines of morphine and heroin.

-correction they both contain a narcotic. cheratussin has codeine and tussionex hydrocodone....everyone responds differently, i still get icky w both but they work to a point..but if u keep coughing, ppl have to cough..it is the lungs trying to expell the mucus..it should give relief but not eliminate the coughin in some cases..mine worked, and then after not taking it my cough was worse! but thankfully, the cheratussin had helped loosen the phlegm..

cheratussin has both the cough suppressant and an expectorant. tussionex, is only a cough suppressant. they both contain codeine. honestly it triggers my headaches and nausea (bc of codeine) but it does shut u up..the reason why cheratussin in a way is better, it loosens up phlegm..ppl especially w asthma..bronchitis etc suppressants shuts u up, but it does nothing to get rid of the phlegm which u have to..tussionex tastes a heck of a lot better...but w cheratussin u get both..it calms ur cough but loosens up mucus.

YES! It absolutely affects blood sugar. Codeine can cause problems for people that have high blood pressure, diabetes and epilepsy. Please see the information on drugs.com

Linda,

Tussionex is a stronger cough supressant is often considered the miracle drug. I've had it before (thankfully my insurance covered it) and I kid you not, my cough of 3+ weeks was completely gone inside of 2-3 doses. It is very expensive, but it feels like a life saver. I was just diagnosed with bronchitis and croup this past week and have maxed out the dosage of the cheratussin and found NO relief. I convinced my doctor to let me try the tussionex, and after one dose, I already feel some relief. My cough is still present, but it is not nearly as hard nor does it last as long per each coughing spell. Ask you doctor for the 3oz dose (the smallest they dispense) and it runs about $50 without insurance. I promise you it will be the best $50 you ever spend when you can finally find relief from your cough and get your life back! Hope you get to feeling better soon!

I have asthma, severe cough, and COPD. Unable to cough mucous up. My primary care doctor prescribed Cheratussin AC earlier this month. I had finished taking it all but was no better--even after taking a round of Prednisone and antibiotic's. The Cheratussin AC worked so I could get a short nap. The Prednisone was keeping me a wake and making me feel very nervous. They call it the 'miracle' drug for a reason--it helps your respiratory system get over the virus, so even with its side affects, it's necessary at times. I finally had coughed so much that I lost my voice entirely and became more severe with the coughing. Referred back to see my pulmonary doctor, he prescribed
TUSSIONEX FOR SEVERE COUGHING. However, Medicare wouldn't cover any portion of it, one bottle would cost nearly $90.00, too costly for me. I don't know the difference in these two med's but the pharmacist is checking back with the pulmonologist with the hope that he will approve me just taking the CHERATUSSIN AC. I don't understand why Medicare wouldn't cover a prescribed medication from a specialist in lung problems and I'm paying for Medicare coverage. Obviously the TUSSIONEX has something in it that works better for my illness or the specialist wouldn't have prescribed it over the other choice CHERATUSSIN AC. i understand they both contain Codeine and you only take one of them at a time. I had finished taking the CHERATUSSIN AC but the cough worsened. I then decided to see my lung doctor for further evaluation. It's absolutely rIdiculous the price being charged for the TUSSINONEX, almost $90.00 for one bottle of the TUSSIONEX (WHO CAN AFFORD IT).
The CHERATUSSIN AC cost nearly $10.00 for one bottle -quite a difference in price, but affordable right now. Who knows in the future cost? So, it comes down to which drug works better? and why such an enormous differen ce in cost?

the reason why you popped positive is bc those drug tests test for opiates..that cough medicine has codeine, an opiate...they test for opiates a group of drugs that cocaine, heroin, crack etc belong too, but if you have a certain amount of a medication in your system that is a derived..that is an opiate like morphine or in this case codeine, simply show proof it is YOUR prescription. because some ppl also use this highly addictive drugs illegally via other means..u should be fine..it is a hit or miss..i remember taking a pain reliever also containing an opiate, but i still tested negative. From then on, i always avoid taking anything a few days before..

Ch AC is available OTC w/proof of age in almost all states BUT it is finding a pharmacist who will allow it. As far as someone abusing it. They are stupid if they do. Codiene is very weak and all you will get is an upset stomach if you drink too much. It does help w/the coughing and sleep but you have to take a whole 4oz bottle
